Neuro-Feedback
Neuro-Feedback, also know as EEG Biofeedback and
Neurotherapy, is a computer assisted learning strategy that
enables people to control their own brain waves and exercise
the brain's regulatory mechanisms. In the simplest of terms,
it is exercise for the brain. By monitoring the EEG we can
observe the brain's rhythms, (the means by which the brain
organizes its own activity). By training specific rhythms we
are exercising the brain in its fundamental role of
controlling and regulating itself. Moods, or "states" are
often a reflection of where the brain's built in "metronome"
is set. But people can get "stuck" in the wrong rhythm.
Fortunately, with training, the brain can learn to change
its own control.
Self-regulation equals self-enhancement
Neuro-Feedback is like a mirror showing us how our body's
control system is operating. However, in this case the
mirror has an opinion! Playing a computer game, the brain
gets "rewarded" for moving in the direction of better
control. No reward is given when the brain moves in the
wrong direction. The repetition of rewards leads to gradual
learning and regulation of a new and better state. For
example, anxiety or depression can diminish, depending on
the "direction" the brain is trained.
Neuro-Feedback training is a painless, non-invasive
procedure. It is used, in conjunction with other therapies,
in treating an array of disorders, such as Attention Deficit
Disorder (ADD/ADHD), Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD),
Epilepsy, Depression, Anxiety, Addictions, Chronic Pain,
Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury, Autoimmune Dysfunction,
Sleep Disorders, and others. It is also used with athletes,
performing artists, executives, etc. as a tool to "train the
brain" for improved performance. Nothing "goes in" during
the training and there are no hand controls. For most
conditions, there are no known adverse side effects of the
training, provided it is conducted under professional
guidance.
At any age, your brain is amazingly adaptable and capable of
learning. Most importantly, with Neuro-Feedback, it can
learn to improve its own performance as the "control center"
of your mind and body.
